Imagine yourself travelling into the infinity of space, entering new dimensions in flying machines we always dreamt about, Awakening would be the perfect sound(track). This album is packed with sci-fi samples, dark creepy melodies occasionally and long passages of intros and outros which make you feel you're travelling millions of light-years away. Unfortunately tracks suffer from using the same formula however. On any given track there is no innovation. There's little of what can be defined as true melody; except on "Tranceformations" which however ends quickly and abruptly after gathering a huge momentum. This could be the best track. Yet each track is so luring, possibly because the way each track starts and progresses initially makes you think it's going to evolve into something huge, but no track really does. Having been released on the legendary Flying Rhino Records is certainly the key why this release is so wanted and so hard to find (the CD, not the vinyl is rare – and the vinyl lacks two tracks one of which is Tranceformations sadly) How much is worth spending on getting this I don't know, but it's still a nice album to have in hand and gaze at on your shelves. I'm sure it has its moments too and played at the right time it can send you there where you always dreamt to be; in space.

Why? I think it's because of people's expectations after their debut album 'Awakening' released a year before. Most of reviewers thought the new one will be similar, with lots of layered acid lines, high tempo and sci-fi samples. Well, they were wrong. And I think it is a good choice for Darshan to change their music, because - to some extent - most of the tracks from Awakening sounded similar, and if they would do another album like it, then it would just be too much. 'Spectra' is more chilled (though not slow at all), more focused on atmosphere, background sounds and effects rather than on leads. While 'Awakening' was full of hits you could play in a DJ-set, this one should be listened and considered as one, 76-minutes long tune. The album starts with a very strange, heavily distorted, slow techno-like track, that speeds up in the middle to over 160BPMs. 'Excursion' & 'Phased Transition' are both similar - they're based around steady kick, deep bassline and complicated drum loops, sent through all possible effects one could imagine. There's no melody there, just some chords and atmospheric pads in the background, with occasional short acid-lines here and there. 'Spectra' is a down-tempo, melodic, mysterious tune with incredible sounding break, wicked drum work and some fine tweaks along the way. With 'Nexus Plexus' we come back to faster music - first part is very similar to tracks 2 & 3, with straight rhythm, detailed drums & acid tweaks, but the second part is completely different - the track slows down and a beautiful, melancholic melody appears. Unfortuately they always made the same track over and over again: intro samples over washy synth and then boom… techno-type progression over psychedelic soundscapes into acis synth leads… samples and washy synths again and then outro. However, this is a particularly good release because it has such strong acid techo residue. Other good Darshan releases are Black Magic on the Black Rhino and Tranceformation on Air Born. This release also has smaples from the film "Jacob's Ladder".

The title track is an early goa trance epic, the trio's master stroke hardly ever matched even during the later, so called golden era of the genre. While simple in structure, it uses a very effective and emotional melody throughout, repetitive yet hypnotizing. Think of the track One Love by Electric Universe. The break at 05:18 when the classic sample is introduced into the track is followed by one of the most memorable and soothing melodies in the history of electronic music. Period. From here on Total Eclipse have only gotten more sohisticated as far as their sound goes, but in my humble opinion the humbleness and depth of Waiting For A New Life was never again quite matched. This is the stuff the whole genre was build upon. True genius. Get it, no matter how long it takes you. I'm out!

Total Eclipse - Tales of the Shaman [FLAC] 2009

Here we go again, another of the old school pioneers coming back with a full-on effort to sully their legacy. Why even bother, unless it's for the dough. Who is to say? I do know however, that what was once was a three man outfit is down to just one Stephane Holweck. The group responsible for the goa trance classics Le Lotus Bleu, Free Lemonade, Aliens, and the Furnace is now a one man show with his latest full release in 10 years. So the question in my mind is it goa, a hybrid between psy and goa (allowing memories of the past) or just the latest in a once great project offering a shitshow of full-on? Before I answer that, check out that cover. Absolutely beautiful, possibly one of the best of the year. There are mushrooms and flowing colors and eyes…a perfect picture for the music. Aesthetics only. But let's be honest. Stephane is in a no win situation here. If this album doesn't consist of layer upon layer of Goa, then the purists won't be happy. If he doesn't change his style, then he will be accused of not evolving. A fickle scene we belong to. Bottom line, this album is not a return to the golden age and does consist of full-on tracks. The whole album is rather vanilla to me. It's not terrible, but it's not that great either. Unfortunately as a pioneer of Goa, that is what you run into. Perhaps my own expectations were too high, but I didn't hear one track that would stay with me. I suppose the best track is the the final one, which is a remix to his track from Violent Relaxation. Nothing more to see here people, keep it moving.

Total Eclipse – Collapsar / Direct Motion [EP] [MP3+FLAC] 1997

Unfortunately, it is not as impressive. It definitely lacks the old school melodic punch, but is built upon really slick production, pulsating drive with enough spice layed over the percussion to keep things head and shoulders above sea level. The lead melody is dropped after the track is halfway through, just like in the aforementioned Partycles, but it is far away from the intricacy or catchiness of their classics, such as Waiting For A New Life, The Furnace or Chaotic Circus. Sure it is a cool track, but nothing more. Whereas Partycles made a great transition from a ticking track to a psychedelic monster, Collapsar never really picks up in either pace or ideas. Pity, starts out promising enough. The B side has Direct Motion, one of those incredibly annoying 'goa trance tunes on tranquilizers'. Take an uptempo track and re-record it pitched down some 25%. I was actually a fan of these mid tempo goa pieces, fine examples would be Deep Frequencies by Pleiadians, New Aura by Tandu and Electronic from Astral Projection. This one goes nowhere, especially if one keeps in mind that the same guys released an entire CD of downtempo music a year before, as part of their classic "Violent Relaxation" sophmore album. In fact, my conscience tells me to let you know how you should skip this one and seek out "Violent relaxation" if you are curious to find out what the fuss was all about.

Alongside artist like Hallucinogen, Astral Projection, Man With No Name and The Infinity Project, Total Eclipse with releases on labels like TIP Records, Blue Room Released and Dragonfly Records are the creators of the true Goa Trance sound from back in the days. Delta Aquarids contains eleven tracks which today sound a bit dated unfortunately, but one has to appreciate the quality of these tracks. Amongst the best tracks some highlights are Free Lemonade, Le Lotus Bleu, Can't Do That, The Crucible and Blade Runner. Tracks are simple in texture when compared especially to their second album "Violent Relaxation" in 1996; but all tracks are nice, and each track has that unmistakeable Total Eclipse sound. Surprisingly this album lacks their best track ever, the 1994 "Waiting For A New Life", which is also the second release on the legendary TIP Records. This track is almost 10 minutes long so two tracks would have had to be left out from this album for it to fit. This album though contains a lot of tracks which weren't released elsewhere so leaving the mentioned track out was probably the right move. Luckily this album has been reissued in 2005 on Inpsyde Media so it's easily availaible. Don't let it go away. If you don't have it, buy it now. Delta Aquarids is one of the highlights of the genre. To point that like a majority of Blue Room Released releases artwork is horrible but don't let that put you off.
